PRINT MIXING

As alluring as monochromatic looks and coordinated sets are, it's always fun to spice things up with a print (or two or three!) Whether it's playing around with a floral print in different scales, or different plaids in similar colorways, there are a few key hacks to make print mixing a much less stressful ordeal. You can go minimalistic and classic, funky and bold or anything in between. This week, we'll be doing a crash course in print mixing 101 with lots of style inspo along the way!

1. When it comes to mixing prints or patterns, dealing with too many colors can be a bit overwhelming. To make things easy, combine prints that fall within the same color scheme. By narrowing down the colors you’re working with, you reduce the chance of your prints clashing and it’s a fun twist on a monochromatic look.

2. Another style hack for mixing prints is to pair a black + white or neutral print with a more colorful one. The black/white print serves as a neutral base, and gives you the freedom to choose a louder and more brightly colored print to pair it with. You also want to play around with prints in different scales...by wearing a small scale print with a larger one, you give both prints their space to shine without competing against each other.

3. Let’s get into print scaling! The same way we used a black/white print as a neutral, we can also use compact prints as a neutral base to pair with a more graphic or large scale print. I love the way these ladies mixed super different prints to create a cohesive slay. ((p.s. Just because it’s working as a neutral doesn’t mean your compact print can’t be in bright colors!))

4. The last style hack for print mixing is to mix similar prints in different scales and/or colorways. With this look, we combined a floral blazer that has a soft color palette and busy pattern with a floral short that has a black ground and larger flowers. The simple graphic tee helps break up the prints and the snake skin in the accessories serves as a neutral accent.
